Duke remains on the forefront of interventional pulmonology, an emerging surgical subspecialty within the field of pulmonary medicine.

Duke’s Interventional Pulmonology Program unites our specialized pulmonary medicine expertise with the most sophisticated techniques and technologies available to diagnose and treat many patients traditionally served by thoracic surgeons.

Working in collaboration with specialists from throughout Duke, our skilled and experienced pulmonologists deliver a broad range of specialized diagnostic and surgical procedures to patients suffering from conditions that include:

  • Cancer of the lung and/or pleural membrane
  • Airway disorders, such as asthma, emphysema, and tracheomalacia
  • Pleural diseases, such as pleural effusion, asbestosis, and pleurisy

The Interventional Pulmonology Program also serves lung and heart-lung transplant recipients.

Our dedicated, multidisciplinary team and state-of-the-art facility offers patients an array of cutting-edge pulmonary services and procedures, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Brachytherapy
  • Bronchoscopies
  • Chest tube and pleural catheter placements
  • Cryotherapy
  • Endobronchial heat therapy
  • Medical pleuroscopy
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Photodynamic therapy
  • Stent placements
  • Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis

We also work closely with the Duke Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery to offer cutting-edge lung volume reduction surgery to emphysema patients who are successful candidates for the procedure.
