Respiratory and pulmonary medicine, also known as pulmonology, involves the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the lungs and respiratory system.

Duke's experienced pulmonologists and critical care specialists use state-of-the-art technology to skillfully diagnose and treat patients suffering from conditions that include:

  • Acute lung injuries
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Chronic pulmonary emboli
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Emphysema (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD)
  • Interstitial lung diseases
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease
  • Respiratory failure

An international referral center for patients with pulmonary vascular diseases, Duke also maintains one of the most highly respected and busiest lung transplantation programs in the country, as well as an unparalleled pulmonary rehabilitation program.

In addition to delivering outstanding clinical care, the division strives -- through our medical education and research efforts -- to ask and answer questions about important issues in our specialty. Our overarching goal is to explore new and more effective ways of managing lung and respiratory disorders.

Breathing easy is something we should all be able to do. Duke’s Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine team is dedicated to doing all we can to make that possible.
