Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Program

This program provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults, including psycho-educational testing for learning disorders. Parent and child behavior management groups and child coping skills groups are available. A summer treatment program for middle school students is available to enhance academic learning strategies, group cooperation, and other skills for school success. The Duke ADHD program offers direct in-school consultation to teachers and other educational professionals.

Biofeedback Services

Our specialists use the most advanced technology to help referred patients 12 and older gain control over their physiological responses to stress and pain, and master deep muscle relaxation. The program uses behavioral management techniques to help people suffering from conditions such as headaches, anxiety disorders, cardiovascular conditions, chronic pain, stress and Type A behavior. Patients typically are referred to us after traditional treatment methods have failed.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

ECT is sometimes used to treat patients suffering from severe affective (mood) disorders and medical illnesses for which pharmacological approaches have been ineffective or unfeasible. ECT uses brief, controlled electrical currents to produce seizures in the brain. These seizures appear to cause biochemical changes which can reduce or eliminate symptoms.

Duke’s ECT Program is a world leader in providing this state-of-the-art therapy to people 18 and older. Our mental health specialists provide ECT three days a week, and we offer a full range of diagnostic, consultative, evaluative, clinical, and case management services five days per week.

Family Care Program (FCP)

The FCP works in partnership with the Durham County Mental Health Center to help Durham County women who are pregnant overcome drug addictions, and to serve young children of addicted women.

The FCP’s outpatient treatment approach is based upon a gender-specific, bio-psychosocial-spiritual model in which addiction is believed to result from biological vulnerability, psychological stress, spiritual emptiness, current social context, and, often, a history of abuse and neglect. This model:

• Focuses on the woman’s role as a parent
• Emphasizes group therapy as way for participants to develop supportive relationships with other women
• Stresses community integration through intensive case management
• Views relapse as a normal part of recovery rather than a source for shame

Coping with infertility and infertility treatments can be stressful. While undergoing treatment, we recognize that you may experience a variety of emotions and challenges, including sadness, anxiety, anger, confusion, self-doubt, guilt, indecision, social isolation, marital problems, and sexual difficulties.

Duke Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences offers psychological support through the Duke Fertility Center for women and couples coping with infertility. Our specialist offers a variety of services, including fertility counseling; individual, couples, and group psychotherapy; grief and loss counseling; treatment decision-making consultation; crisis intervention; and third-party reproduction assessment (for couples needing donor egg, donor sperm, or a gestational carrier).

Inpatient Care

Patients suffering from severe mental illness or who are in mental or emotional crisis are sometimes best cared for in an inpatient setting. Duke clinicians provide experienced and compassionate mental health care to adults 18 and older in two inpatient facilities:

Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic
