Maxillofacial trauma surgery is surgery performed on the face and skull as a result of an injury. The surgeries can be life-saving or secondary procedures to improve facial appearance and function.

The types of injuries include:

  • Treatment of the soft tissue (skin, muscles) and hard tissue (bones)
  • Fractures of the skull, cheeks, nose, eye bones and jaw bones
  • Lacerations to the face

These injuries require coordinated, expert care by a team of specialists in order to provide patients with the best possible outcomes for these complex surgical procedures.

Duke’s experienced team includes board-certified otolaryngologists, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and oral surgeons coming together to provide multidisciplinary care to patients requiring maxillofacial trauma surgery.

The latest techniques are used to regenerate hard and soft tissue to achieve an optimum result for restoration of facial form and jaw function.

Many injuries require immediate care and Duke’s Emergency Trauma Center provides state-of-the-art operating facilities and is a Level I Trauma Center for the State of North Carolina.

Patients are seen at the CMF Trauma Clinic held in Otolaryngology Clinic 1H on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Click the link below for more location details.
