Duke Physical and Occupational Therapy offers inpatient and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation services to patients with heart disease and disorders.

Our primary patient populations include those:

  • Recovering from myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • With heart arrhythmias (irregular heart beat)
  • With congestive heart failure
  • Recovering from pacemaker implantation
  • With general cardiac conditions

Assessment

Our physical and occupational therapists use a range of special tests, such as the six-minute walk, to measure the patient's heart and pulmonary strength and to determine intervention strategies that best promote healing.

Restoring Heart Function

We work closely with each patient to develop an exercise and rehabilitation program that improves the patient's heart function and strength, promotes endurance, and supports activities of daily living.

Educating the patient about his or her condition and ways to improve heart health are also an important aspect of our work.
