Duke is one of the country's premier centers for management of skull base tumors. Our highly trained neurologists, neurosurgeons, and radiation oncologists have the experience and dedication needed to successfully evaluate and treat skull base tumors.

The skull base is at the interface of the ear and other sensory structures, the brain, and the upper neck. It contains the cranial nerves, which control functions such as vision, smell, taste, hearing, balance, facial movement, voice, swallowing, and other critical, sensory functions.

Hearing loss and balance problems are the most common symptoms of skull base tumors. Weakness of the face, vision problems, and headaches among other symptoms can also occur.

While skull base tumors are most commonly benign, non-cancerous tumors, tumor growth or resection can produce deficits in these sensory functions. Successful management requires the expertise of all members of a team of accomplished physicians.

Expert Care, Unparalleled Facilities

Our center is the only skull base program in the region that offers comprehensive, multispecialty care with a team of experienced specialists providing coordinated care for skull base tumors.

Our team includes neurotologists, head and neck surgeons, endoscopic skull base surgeons and neurosurgeons. Our neurotologists, David M. Kaylie, MD, and Debara L. Tucci, MD, are talented skull base surgeons and are also trained in stereotactic radiotherapy. They provide expert care for all hearing and balance problems.

Our state-of-the-art surgical and radiation facilities are unparalleled in the Southeast, and all patient care is centered in one location, allowing for convenient scheduling and efficient evaluation.

Commonly Treated Tumors

Our neurotologists treat a wide variety of tumors. All patients receive a comprehensive evaluation by all members of the team. The most appropriate treatment plan for each individual patient is then made.

We treat the following types of tumors; click the name to learn more about the tumor and treatment options:

  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Meningioma
  • Glomus tumor
