Otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery include diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the ear, such as hearing loss, chronic infection, tumors, and other disorders of the ear and balance system in children and adults. Facial nerve disorders, such as Bell's palsy and tumors, are also treated.

Duke's surgeons have undergone extensive training and board certification to care for patients with ear, hearing, and balance problems and skull base tumors.

In addition to providing current state-of-the-art management of a variety of disorders, some of our patients with targeted disorders can choose to participate in clinical trials for new treatments.

Disorders treated include:

  • Conductive hearing loss
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (nerve hearing loss)
  • Cholesteatoma (middle ear skin cyst)
  • Otosclerosis
  • Hearing problems related to trauma
  • Tympanic membrane perforations
  • Chronic ear infection
  • Middle ear and skull base tumors such as acoustic neuroma, glomus tumors, meningiomas, and cancer

Our doctors offer a number of specialized treatment options to meet patients unique hearing needs. These specialized services include hearing rehabilitation, the Vestibular Disorders Clinic, and the Skull Base Program.

Hearing Rehabilitation

We provide comprehensive evaluation of hearing loss in adults and children and ensure that our patients hearing needs are met. Learn more about our pediatric otolaryngology program.

As part of our hearing rehabilitation program we offer cochlear and Baha implants.

Cochlear Implants

Duke’s cochlear implant program is dedicated to restoring hearing in patients of all ages with severe to profound hearing loss.

Find out more about the cochlear implant program.

Baha Implants

Baha implants are also performed for individuals with conductive hearing loss or unilateral profound senorineural hearing loss.

Vestibular Disorders Services

For inner ear balance (vestibular) disorders, we evaluate and treat Meniere’s disease, benign positional vertigo, vestibular neuronitis, labyrinthitis, and migraine-associated vertigo, among other disorders.

Learn more about the vestibular disorders program.

Skull Base Services

The skull base team includes, in addition to the neurotologists, physicians in neurosurgery as well as radiation oncology who offer comprehensive evaluation and treatment options for skull base tumors such as acoustic neuroma and glomus jugulare tumors.
