Head and neck cancer includes many different malignancies. The most common type of cancer in the head and neck is squamous cell carcinoma which originates in the cells that line the inside of the mouth, nose, voicebox, and throat.

Less common types of head and neck cancers include thyroid and salivary gland tumors, lymphomas, and sarcomas.

Treatment for head and neck cancers can include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

With Duke’s multidisciplinary team of experts in this field, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and hematology oncologists work together to provide the best form of treatment for the patient.

We seek to provide treatments that offer the best chance for cure while trying to optimize the permanent treatment side effects and quality of life of our patients.

In many cases, the primary treatment includes both radiation therapy and surgery; chemotherapy is sometimes used as an additional treatment.
