Duke offers diagnostic services and innovative treatments to patients with a wide range of memory disorders problems -- from the worried well to those suffering from severe dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Specific memory disorders we treat include:

  • Mild cognitive impairment
  • Post-traumatic memory loss
  • Amnesia
  • Dementia, including Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, and vascular dementia
  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Diagnosing the Cause of Memory Loss

Our physicians are experienced at recognizing the signs of memory loss and finding the underlying causes of these disorders. We use a variety of techniques to assess patients, including:

  • Patient observation and memory tests
  • Patient and family history
  • Neuropsychological evaluations
  • Structure/functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI/fMRI)
  • Positron emission tomography(PET)

Access to Leading-Edge Treatments

After a diagnosis has been made, our specialists will work with you, your family, and your primary care physician to devise a care and treatment plan that targets the underlying cause of the memory disorder.

Duke offers traditional treatment options, including:

  • Education
  • Intervention
  • Counseling
  • Support groups for patients and their caregivers
  • Medication

In addition to traditional methods of treatment, we offer patients the opportunity to participate in research trials of new therapies and medications that give them access to the most advanced treatments available.
