Nurseries at Duke University Hospital, Durham Regional Hospital, and Alamance Regional Medical Center offer the full spectrum of comprehensive care:
- Duke Intensive Care Nursery admits more than 800 infants per year and is a major referral center for infants with respiratory failure and persistent pulmonary hypertension, perinatal asphyxia, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and complex surgical problems.
- Duke Transitional Care Nursery helps transition infants from the intensive care nursery to home with the help of a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, lactation specialists, therapists, and dietitians.
- Neurodevelopmental Follow-Up Clinic provides continuing care for high-risk infants to identify disabilities and provide care and intervention support.
- Duke Special Infant Care Nursery treats infants not requiring intensive care. This seven bed unit places special emphasis on preparing infants and parents to return home.
- Durham Regional Hospital Special Care Nursery provides care for acutely ill and convalescent infants including those needing short term mechanical ventilation, CPAP, surfactant administration, hyperalimentation, PICC lines, and care for infants with ostomies.
- Alamance Regional Medical Center Special Care Nursery is a 12-bed unit staffed by Duke neonatologists that provides care for acutely ill and convalescing infants.
- Special Infant Care Clinic (SICC) is a multidisciplinary medical and neurodevelopmental follow-up clinic for high-risk infants. The clinic team is comprised of a neonatologist, pediatrician, child psychologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, social worker, and nurse clinician.
- Neonatal-Infant Palliative Care Program is a family-centered program for newborns and infants diagnosed with serious life-threatening conditions or overwhelming illnesses that are no longer responding to curative care.
