Comprehensive, patient-centered care is the cornerstone of the labor and delivery experience at Duke Medicine. We offer state-of-the-art birthing centers in Durham, North Carolina.

Our caring and experienced physicians, labor and delivery nurses, and certified nurse midwives strive to:

• Provide high-quality, cost-effective care that is multidisciplinary and personalized to all patients, from the prenatal period through delivery
• Work with families to create and support the birth experiences they desire
• Safely and effectively manage patient pain and other symptoms
• Adhere to the standards of care and staffing established by national organizations that include the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses; and the American Association of Pediatrics

Both the Duke Birthing Center and The Birth Place at Durham Regional Hospital offer homey labor delivery suites equipped with unobtrusive state-of-the-art medical technology and a neonatal stabilization team that is prepared to attend any delivery. Our knowledgeable nurses, midwives, and postpartum and lactation specialists are experts in helping new moms learn to care for their babies.

Birthing balls and bars are available to laboring moms, as is a pantry to family members. Unless a parent instructs us otherwise, we do not routinely offer supplemental formula, glucose water, or pacifiers to newborns. We encourage healthy babies to room with mom, but they're also welcome to stay in the well-baby nurseries.
