Duke's pediatric infectious disease specialists focus on the management of infants, children, and adolescents with acute or chronic bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic infections.

We integrate clinical care with research, public health, and epidemiology to offer a broad range of consultative services. Our physicians bring a depth of experience in treating infections in immunocompromised children, including those who have undergone organ transplantation and those with cancer.

Frequent reasons for referral include:

  • Sinusitis
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin infections
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Birth-acquired herpes (HSV)
  • Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
  • Hepatitis A, B, C
  • Tuberculosis
  • Meningitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Recurrent or severe otitis media
  • Unknown bone, joint, and deep tissue infections

We also offer vaccine and travel consultations.

In addition, our federally funded HIV/AIDS program and its associated AIDS clinical trials provide access to therapeutic protocols for HIV-infected and HIV-exposed children.

Any suspected infections, exposure to an infection, or questions about an infection are appropriate for referral.
