Duke offers comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients with a variety of esophageal disorders, including:

• Swallowing disorders
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Barrett’s esophagus
• Esophageal cancer

Physicians from gastroenterology work closely with surgeons who are recognized leaders in the surgical treatment of esophageal diseases, including newer laparoscopic techniques.

Benign Disorders

For patients with swallowing disorders and gastroesophageal reflux, we offer esophageal manometry and ambulatory pH monitoring, including capsule pH (Bravo) studies.

We also offer new endoscopic techniques for the treatment of both esophageal reflux as well as the pre-malignant condition of Barrett’s esophagus.

Malignant Disorders

Duke has expertise in the management of esophageal cancer. Treatments include esophageal stent placement and photodynamic therapy (PDT).
