Share

Our multidisciplinary epilepsy team specializes in treating pediatric patients and tailors our care approach to account for the child's age and development.

Diagnosis

ep5..jpgOur doctors use state-of-the-art technology to diagnose the cause of seizures and to devise a treatment plan to target the root causes.

Diagnostic tools we use include:

  • Inpatient and outpatient electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Computed tomography (CT scan)

Treatment

Our pediatric program offers comprehensive treatment of the causes and symptoms of epilepsy.

Doctors manage the symptoms of the epilepsy through use of medication, dietary therapies including the ketogenic diet, innovative therapies, and referral to speech pathologists and psychologists.

When medication and therapy don't prevent the symptoms, our pediatric neurosurgeons offer a number of surgical procedures aimed at fixing the area in the brain that is causing the seizures to occur.

Surgical procedures we offer include:

  • Intracranial monitoring
  • Anterior temporal lobectomies
  • Cortical resections
  • Hemisperectomies
  • VNS placement

Why Choose Duke

In addition to providing exceptional medical care for patients, we also provide services to make evaluation and treatment of epilepsy less daunting for patients and their families.

These service include a playroom filled with toys and activities for patients, accommodations that allow parents to stay with children in the same room overnight, and access to child life specialists.

Child life specialists are members of your child's care team who are professionally trained and certified to provide educational and emotional support to children of all ages.
