People across the country are working tirelessly to improve the ability of our health care system to effectively respond to a wide array of potential disasters. At Duke we are doing our part to become better prepared for these disasters.

Emergency management is a difficult task that relies upon strong relationships and communication between everyone involved.

Effective planning depends upon rigorous training and ongoing practice before it can translate into effective emergency management action. Each individual has a role to fill, and must therefore assume personal responsibility to enable the link between solid planning and appropriate response.

Hospital Incident Command System

At Duke we are doing our part to become better prepared for the unknown, and the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) is at the core of our disaster preparedness efforts. The system offers:

  • A flexible response system customized to different types of emergencies
  • Improved accountability by assigning specific emergency-response tasks
  • Enhanced documentation through the use of standardized forms and check sheets

HICS delivers a more structured disaster response mechanism for Duke University Hospital, as well as a template for the ongoing development and planning of Emergency Management initiatives.

Every person in Duke University Hospital has received training about the basics of disaster planning and their responsibilities in the event of a disaster, and we encourage Duke employees who wish to learn more about emergency management training and resources to contact their supervisors.

Contact Us about Emergency Management

Because hospitals and health care providers across the country are facing many of the same issues regarding disaster planning, Duke welcomes the free exchange of information and ideas in the hopes of facilitating this process.
