Emergency clinicians are specialists who are able to recognize, diagnose, and make recommendations for a variety of illnesses and situations. In any given hour, they see patients suffering from minor colds to trauma, and everything in between.

Our staff includes the following professionals:

Medical Faculty

Our medical staff practices within the Division of Emergency Medicine, a component of the Department of Surgery.

Our physicians are certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Physicians, and many have additional certifications in specialties that include pediatrics, international medicine, internal medicine, and sports medicine. Most are active in state and national emergency medicine organizations.

An acknowledged leader in emergency treatment, trauma care, and critical care transport, Duke’s Division of Emergency Medicine is also recognized for its valuable research initiatives. Faculty members collaborate with specialists from other disciplines throughout Duke to better understand and treat emergency medical issues that include:

  • Heart or lung disease
  • Infections
  • Snake bites
  • Acute pain

Our resident physicians (medical school graduates pursuing specialty training) are supervised by experienced board-certified emergency physicians as part of the School of Medicine’s fully accredited residency training program.

Duke Emergency Services also employs a number of board-certified physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

Nurses

Our 80-plus registered nurses, nurse practitioners, medication-licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants are critical to Duke’s multidisciplinary emergency care team.

Many hold advanced clinical positions within Duke University Hospital that focus on special populations such as pediatrics, neurology, cardiology, and trauma.

Partners and Additional Health Care Staff

Our cross-disciplinary team also includes specialists such as respiratory therapists, clinical social workers, and child-life specialists. Each provides a vital service to Duke’s emergency patients and their families.

Duke Emergency Services also works closely with area law enforcement and emergency response teams, as well as Duke entities that include:

  • International Patient Center
  • Pastoral Services
  • Patient Billing

In addition, our partnership with Durham County Emergency Medical Service enables us to seamlessly and efficiently deliver Duke’s exceptional emergency care to members of the local community.
