Duke Center for Eating Disorder offers several skill-focused, psycho-educational and process groups. New groups are added regularly.
Interested persons are invited to call and inquire about groups not listed as we are always open to expanding services to meet our clients’ needs. Current groups include:
- Adult Skills Group is a weekly group based on dialectical behavioral therapy. Skills taught include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Homework helps reinforce skills aimed at reducing eating disorder behaviors while improving overall quality of life.
- Adult Interpersonal Group is a weekly process group for adults struggling with disordered eating. It provides a supportive environment in which adults can discuss how the disordered eating has interfered with their life and how to initiate and maintain meaningful relationships. Topics of discussion may include boundary setting, assertiveness, intimate relationships, establishing healthy friendships, and school or career goals.
- Adolescent Skills Group is a weekly group for high school students with disordered eating. This group combines psycho-education about eating disorders with skills to better manage stress, regulate emotions, deal with relationship challenges, and become more mindful in every day life.
- ACT with Body Image Group is a weekly group based on acceptance and commitment therapy. The group teaches willingness to have difficult thoughts and feelings in the service of one’s values. Members participate in activities and discussion that diminish the power of body-related thoughts and feelings that support maladaptive eating, exercise healthy eating behavior, and work on building a rich, meaningful life with all of these internal experiences.
- Parent Training and Support Group is a weekly group designed to teach parents skills to manage eating disorder symptoms in their children. In addition to getting invaluable support from other parents, group members learn skills such as behavior management, emotion regulation, and "anti-perfectionism." The Off the C.U.F.F. manual by Nancy Zucker, PhD, is used. A weekend workshop is offered on a quarterly basis for families who live out of state. Order the Off the C.U.F.F. manual (PDF, 57 KB)
- Spouse Group is open to spouses of individuals recovering from an eating disorder, regardless of where they are being treated. In a supportive environment, spouses learn how to help manage their loved one's eating disorder. Treatment focus is on the process of recovery, communication and relationship skills, and managing emotions.
