Port-wine stains are vascular birthmarks that can be present on any part of the body and often range in color from a faint pink to very dark purple.
Port-wine stains on the face often cause anxiety in patients and their parents.
Duke dermatologists offer advanced treatments to reduce the appearance of port-wine stains on the skin.
We offer laser treatment to reduce the appearance of the port-wine stain. This treatment seals the blood vessels without destroying the skin.
Multiple treatments are often needed to reduce the appearance of the stain.
At Duke, we use laser treatments for patients ranging from young infants to adults. For extensive port-wine stains or for older children unable to remain still, general anesthesia may be necessary and will be arranged for your child.
The procedure is quick and not very painful.
Bruising is expected after each treatment and usually lasts seven to 21 days. Swelling, particularly on the face, resolves over 24-48 hours.
