Photodynamic therapy is a specialized light therapy that uses a drug and a particular type of light to kill cancer-causing cells.

If left untreated, these cells can develop into actinic keratosis (pre-skin cancers) as well as superficial basal cell carcinoma. The light, when used alone, is also FDA-approved for the treatment of acne.
