AIDS Legal Assistance Project

Share

The AIDS Legal Assistance (ALA) Project was founded in January 1996 as a result of the unmet need for legal assistance for HIV/AIDS patients in the state of North Carolina.

Services the AIDS Legal Assistance Project Offers

  • Help with the creation of permanent plans for children of HIV/AIDS individuals
  • Work toward obtaining crucial health and financial benefits for patients
  • Assist with end-of-life planning (wills, inheritance)
  • Answer questions regarding the legal rights of the HIV/AIDS community
  • Provide in-home or hospital visitation for legal advice

The ALA Project works closely with the DART Center staff to provide needed legal advice and services, including:

  • Each semester, 10 law students represent clients under the close supervision of two attorneys, Carolyn McAllaster and Jane Wettach
  • Each student receives academic credit for working a minimum of 100 hours during the semester on client representation. The two supervising attorneys in the project also provide considerable direct client representation

The students and associates of the legal clinic fully understand that their clients are facing a life-threatening disease, and every effort is made to quickly provide needed services.
