At Duke, we are dedicated to offering children and adolescents with nutritional disorders and health issues related to obesity the most effective care available in an atmosphere of caring and compassion.

The Duke Healthy Lifestyles Program -- designed by the faculty and staff at Duke Children’s Division of Primary Care -- is a six-month, intensive, family-centered lifestyle management intervention designed for families with overweight children aged 0-22.

Any child whose body mass index (BMI) is at or above the 85th percentile meets the national standards for being at-risk or overweight and should be evaluated by a physician.

Healthy Lifestyles is based on the latest evidence for creating and achieving realistic goals for optimal weight to reduce risk for cardiovascular disease.

5-3-2-1 Almost None

Our patented intervention is called 5-3-2-1-Almost None and is based on the following five strategies:

  • Eat at least five fruits and vegetables every day.
  • Eat three structured meals every day.
  • Keep "screen time" to two hours or less per day.
  • Be active for one hour every day.
  • Consume almost no sweetened food or drinks.
