Duke's Cerebrovascular Center offers treatment for rare brain disorders, including moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease is a progressive disorder in which the arteries at the base of the brain become blocked. Moyamoya means “puff of smoke” in Japanese and describes the look of the tangle of tiny vessels formed to compensate for the blockage.

The disease primarily affects children, but it can also occur in adults and presents itself as a stroke.

Without treatment, patients with moyamoya disease will experience a neurological decline as a result of multiple strokes. The disease can be fatal if the blockage causes brain hemorrhaging.

Treatment for Moyamoya Disease

Our physicians and surgeons have the expertise and tools to treat this rare disorder. We focus our treatment of moyamoya on restoring blood flow to the brain to prevent further strokes; this process is known as revascularization.

Treatment options at the Duke Cerebrovascular Center include several types of revascularization surgery, including simple dural synangiosis and various microsurgical bypass procedures that restore blood flow to the brain.
