Women have unique anesthesia needs. Duke women's anesthesiologists engage in specialized academic and clinical training to help them meet the needs of their patients.

We provide continuous in-house faculty coverage of obstetrics, including labor and delivery, as well as other gynecological procedures that require anesthesia services.

Labor and Delivery Services

Childbirth doesn't have to be the most painful experience of your life. Women have many choices for pain prevention during childbirth.

Duke's women’s anesthesiologists are specialized and uniquely trained to meet the physical and psychological needs of mothers-to-be.

Our clinical faculty provide a full range of anesthetic services to accommodate approximately 3,000 deliveries per year. Your safety and comfort during your birth experience is our priority.

We offer a wide range of services including:

  • Regional anesthesia, such as epidurals and spinals
  • Low-dose epidurals, patient-managed epidurals
  • General anesthesia when needed
  • Post-operative pain management
  • Non-pharmalogical care

We work with Duke OB-GYN and Maternal-Fetal Medicine to ensure that your needs are met and that your providers are aware of the status of your care.

Gynecology

Women are unique in the way they respond to anesthesia. At Duke Women's Anesthesia, we specialize in making sure that a woman is as safe and comfortable as possible when she needs anesthesia.

Services include:

  • Nerve blocks
  • IV narcotics
  • Fluid and pain management
