Chronic Pain

The anesthesiologists in the Duke Pain and Palliative Care Program play a critical role in the diagnosis and management of many kinds of chronic pain.

Evaluation

Your chronic pain anesthesiologist will do a comprehensive evaluation that includes a detailed pain history, physical examination, and laboratory tests to assess your painful condition.

You will complete a pain perception profile to help your anesthesiologist evaluate the multiple factors involved in the generation of chronic pain syndromes.

Following your thorough evaluation, your anesthesiologist will create a plan to effectively target your pain.

Treatment

We treat many types of pain, including orthopaedic-related pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, sickle cell crisis, cancer-related pain, and other chronic painful conditions.

Some therapies we perform include nerve blocks to numb painful areas and to deliver steroid therapy to an inflamed body part. Further, we can implant medication delivery catheters or do other procedures in the operating suite, which may alleviate chronic pain symptoms.

We collaborate with neurologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and social workers to tackle chronic pain from all angles.
