Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology

Duke's cardiothoracic anesthesiologists are responsible for the medical management and anesthetic care of the thousands of patients who report to Duke each year for a variety of cardiac procedures.

With more than 1,000 adult cardiothoracic procedures performed at Duke each year, the training and expertise of our physicians is unsurpassed.

We offer a variety of different medicines and procedures to ensure that each patient receives expert care tailored to his or her specific needs.

Cardiac Care

For patients undergoing cardiac surgery, our board-certified anesthesiologists offer advanced diagnostic tests like transesophageal enchocardiography, which allows us to get an inside view of the heart and diagnose the problems more accurately.

We also manage the separation from cardiopulmonary bypass to ensure that patients are safely treated with minimal pain resulting from the procedure.

Our role for caring for cardiac patients extends beyond the operating room and now includes identifying and modifying risks for patients with complex cardiovascular disease in regards to any medical procedure they undergo.

Thoracic Care

For thoracic (non-cardiac) surgery, we offer patient education to explain the complex procedure and the need for medication. We manage the patients' perioperative pain through regional anesthesia techniques, including thoracic epidurals and paravertebral blocks.

Research

Our anesthesiologists are constantly refining their skills and learning new techniques by engaging in a wide spectrum of research activities.

They have an international reputation for publishing articles in high-profile journals and creating and defining new cardiothoracic anesthesia practices.
