Giving You the Tools to Beat Cancer

Read about Cancer Screenings »

At some point in our lives, 1 in 3 of us will get cancer. At Duke Raleigh Cancer Center, we’re determined to help you beat those odds.

We offer a broad variety of community seminars and screenings to help you learn the early warning signs of cancer and take steps to head it off at the pass. Our healthy lifestyle programs offer insights about how to turn the relationship between cancer, diet, and exercise in your favor. And through comprehensive risk assessment, we can help you identify your unique cancer risk factors and develop a cancer prevention road map designed to help guide you toward a healthier future.

Some of the most promising and provocative new discoveries about possible ways to prevent cancer are emerging from research being done at Duke. These strategies range from early diagnostic techniques that may help doctors literally nip precancerous cells in the bud to genetic screening of individuals at elevated risk for cancer. As a member of Duke University Health System, we’re uniquely poised to make these studies and their results quickly available to people in our service area who are interested in reducing their risk for developing cancer.

Early, Accurate Diagnosis: The Key First Step

Extensive research confirms what common sense suggests: The earlier a malignancy is caught and treatment is begun, the better the chances of recovery. That’s why Duke Raleigh Cancer Center is committed to providing a wide variety of diagnostic services in a timely, highly responsive manner within our Outpatient Imaging Center. And with a full-time radiologist on hand, test results are quickly interpreted to further fast-track treatment.

Like other aspects of cancer care, diagnostic technologies are constantly evolving and improving. Because we’re so closely associated with one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, our patients have access to the very latest approaches.

Among the advanced technologies we offer is PET (positron emission tomography), which facilitates early detection of cancers such as lung, colorectal, breast, esophageal, head and neck, lymphoma, and melanoma. Often used in conjunction with other diagnostic imaging procedures, PET can help physicians provide prompt, highly targeted--and thus more effective therapy--for cancer patients.

Raleigh Cancer Center is home to the area’s first state-of-the-art endoscopic ultrasound facility. This minimally invasive technique provides highly accurate evaluation of upper gastrointestinal tract, abdominal, and pulmonary tumors, making it possible for physicians to target therapies with far greater precision. We also offer stereotactic breast biopsy for precise evaluation of possible breast tumors, as well as nuclear medicine imaging technologies including MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and CT (computerized tomography).

Easing Your Way Through Treatment

You or a loved one has just been diagnosed with cancer. Now what? Making your way through the often complex steps of cancer care can be nearly as bewildering and stressful as the disease itself. With a comprehensive array of diagnostic and treatment services under one roof, Raleigh Cancer Center helps simplify the process of getting cancer care.

We’ve also developed a distinctive personal approach to helping cancer patients meet the challenges they face: the patient navigator. Highly trained in all aspects of cancer care, your navigator works to simplify your life at every phase by making the arrangements for your diagnostic studies, treatments, and follow-up services.

Your patient navigator makes the appropriate referrals and appointments, distributes information among your caregivers, and follows up on every detail so that you can be assured you’re getting the best care possible and focus your energies on your recovery. State-of-the-Art Care Centered on You

State-of-the-art Equipment

Because cancer is such a complex and challenging condition to treat, cancer patients benefit from the combined expertise and perspectives of a variety of health care professionals. A truly multidisciplinary approach is one of the primary reasons that Duke Raleigh Cancer Center is so acclaimed--and it’s a hallmark of the care our cancer patients receive.

Our customized care plan for each patient reflects the input and insights of highly trained community physicians, along with their Duke colleagues, many of whom have particular expertise in unique cancer types and treatments. Our cancer care teams review cases together every week to ensure that each patient is receiving the best care possible. And, of course, we keep your personal physician updated on your treatments and progress to support your ongoing recovery.

The Raleigh Cancer Center’s radiation therapy resources include a linear accelerator that makes it possible for radiation oncologists to target cancer cells with extraordinary precision. Our full-service treatment simulator is another state-of-the-art asset, allowing cancer physicians to accurately plan radiation treatment and optimize its safety and effectiveness. We’re also building capabilities in new technologies such as IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy), which concentrates radiation on tumors with greater precision than ever before possible, and brachytherapy, which uses medication-releasing pellets, tubes, or other tiny delivery devices to target tumors within tissues and organs.

A key aspect of our clinical services is our ability to offer promising new treatment strategies that are typically available only through a limited number of world-renowned cancer centers nationwide. Patients who choose to take part in Duke clinical trials of these novel therapies can have their progress monitored right here in Raleigh.
