General gastroenterology; diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy; colon cancer screening and surveillance; health-services research, specifically quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of medical care in gastroenterology
Research Interests
I am a gastroenterologist and health services researcher with an interest in optimizing health care value. My research is focused on three areas that address both cost and quality in gastroenterology:
1) Cost-Effectiveness of hepatitis C therapy: In collaboration with colleagues in hepatology, we are developing decision models for hepatitis C therapy that enable evaluation of new therapies and novel treatment paradigms.
2) Efficiency of gastrointestinal endoscopy: In collaboration with colleagues in industrial engineering, we are building discrete event simulation models of ambulatory and hospital based endoscopy centers. These models are used to optimize operational efficiency as well as measure quality in endoscopy.
3) Quality of colorectal cancer screening: We are evaluating the processes and outcomes of colorectal cancer screening using both fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy. We are also designing intervention studies to improve the processes of care.
This physician (or a member of their immediate family) has a working relationship (i.e. consulting, research, and/or educational services) with the companies listed below. These relations have been reported to the health system leadership and, when appropriate, management plans are in place to address potential conflicts.
