Clinical Interests
Cardiac and thoracic anesthesia; transfusion medicine; transesophageal echocardiography; perioperative intensive care

Research Interests
Current research interests include outcome analysis of cardiothoracic surgical patients as well as transfusion safety and clinical trials of blood management strategies.  Serving as Co-Director of the Acute Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit provides an opportunity to continue cardiac surgical outcomes research as part of the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Research Endeavors (CARE) Group.  As Co-Director of the Duke Center for Blood Conservation, I have the opportunity to study the impact of blood management on patient outcomes and plan to be further involved in research protocols involving oxygen therapeutic agents. Current protocols include a phase 4 trial of blood conservation techniques in multi-level spine surgery and a phase 2 trial of colloid therapy in cardiac surgery.  An ongoing  randomized, controlled trial of the impact of optimal fluid management on perioperative transfusion requirements for major urologic surgery should complete within one year.  Completed projects include a database investigation of the effect of intraoperative physiologic variables on mortality and neurologic outcome in coronary artery bypass surgery patients and phase 2 trials of oxygen therapeutic agents in cardiac surgery.  Thanks to the support of a grant from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, efficacy trial of paravertebral nerve blockade for thoracoscopic pulmonary resection has been completed with results published in the May 2006 issue of Anesthesiology.
