Clinical Interests
Research focused on improving therapeutics for neuroblastoma, improving the quality of life of children with complex, chronic or fatal illnesses, and study of areas where medical and theological interests intersect

Research Interests
In the past several years I have focused much of my effort on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and on bringing a novel monoclonal antibody from pre-clinical studies, through protein production, to trial for children with GD2-expressing tumors such as neuroblastoma.  More recently I have turned my energy toward improving the quality of life for children and their families throughout the trajectory of their illness.  This work includes development of education programs, research in decision-making at the end of life (most recently involving a grant-funded project in improving ways for children to participate in end-of-life decision making) and programatic development aimed at building support for clinicians caring for children with complex, chronic or life-limiting disease.  My work has also turned towards the valuable lessons that can be learned about the meaning of illness and well-being at the intersection of medicine, theology, philosophy and literature.  In this area I am developing courses at this intersection, as well as putting together a program called 'The Healing Arts: Divinity, Medicine, Nursing' that brings together students from the schools of medicine, nursing and divinity around issues of illness, suffering and death.
