Research Interests:
Outcomes investigation has been the focus of my research activity over the last few years, specifically addressing the two main pediatric respiratory diseases, cystic fibrosis and asthma.  While directing the CF clinical research program at the Duke Combined CF Center, we have become part of the CF Foundation's Therapeutic Development Network and become involved in many different clinical trials over the last 12 months.  These include investigation of potential genetic relationships on CF disease progression and outcome, as well as studies of new therapeutics, participating in phase III trials of new agents that might help to slow disease progression.
Regarding asthma, there is still much to be understood regarding reducing asthma morbidity.  Every year, more than half of the estimated 22 million Americans diagnosed with asthma suffer from at least one acute attack.  Focusing his investigations in the area of outcomes research, Dr. Michelson has been looking at risk factors in asthma, including the increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity.  By examining large national databases, he is examining for a potential relationship between obesity and asthma severity in the pediatric population.  Potential new areas of investigation include collaborating with investigators skilled in using Geographic Information System mapping, using these tools to study obesity as well as the impact of the ‘built environment’ on asthma incidence.
