Clinical Interests
Pulmonary fibrosis, interstitial lung diseases, lung transplantation

Research Interests
The general focus of my research interests are  1)new treatments for fibrotic lung diseases, 2) and understanding the genetic basis of pulmonary fibrosis, and 3)development of novel biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of interest are idiopathic intersitial pneumonias.  I am involved in Industry-based and NIH/DCRI-based clinical trials in IPF, and NIH sponsored research on the genomics and genetics of pulmonary fibrosis.  I am PI at Duke and collaborating with investigators at National Jewish Health, U. Colorado, and Vanderbilt on a linkage and  genome-wide association studies in familial pulmonary fibrosis. We have an extensive clinical database and DNA repository on over 500 families.  We have identified several candidate loci and genes in these areas of linkage are being investigated for disease-susceptability mutations, and we have identified risk variants in the mucin genes.  We are using gene expression analysis on peripheral blood and lung to identifiy biomarkers.

Industry Relationships and Collaborations (What's this?)

This physician (or a member of their immediate family) has a working relationship (i.e. consulting, research, and/or educational services) with the companies listed below. These relations have been reported to the health system leadership and, when appropriate, management plans are in place to address potential conflicts.
