Research Interests
I have under taken 17 clinical trials over the last three years at Duke, many of them as primary investigator. I have received a number of industrial grants over the last three years, which has continued into 2002 year. My major industrial grants that I have received during 2002 include looking at a slow release epidural morphine for postoperative pain in the orthopedic patient population group and now in abdominal surgery. This study was a multicenter trial conducted with Skypharma. We are also currently undertaking a study with the epidural slow release morphine in knee replacement surgery. I have two further pain studies looking at slow release oral hydromorphone in the orthopedic population group underway. I have also successfully studied a new Doppler cardiac output monitor for Arrow International during major spine surgery. I have a number of personal trials underway with my major area of interest looking at coagulation changes in hip replacement surgery with the use Thromboelastography. The aim of this study is to determine when there is hypercoagulation during surgery and thus ultimately prevent this change and hopefully thus reduce the incidence of Deep Vein Thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
