Research Interests:
 My research activities can be broken down into two categories: translational research and clinical trials research.  
 My translational research projects involve developing novel regional and sytemic treatment strategies for patients with malignant melanoma.  We have developed animal models that mimic the human clinical situation of advanced extremity melanoma and systemic melanoma. Our approaches involve testing new/novel drugs that are themselves cytotoxic or inhibit various chemotherapy resistance pathways or signaling pathways that may decrease the effacacy of concurrently administered chemotehrapeutic agents. We collaborate closely with Dr Henry Friedman and Dr Francis Ali-Osman on these projects.  In addition,  we are also exploring how hyperthermia and vascular targeting agents can augment concurrently administered chemotherapy.  The vascular targets we focus on are VEGF and N-cadherin.  We colloborate closely with Dr Mark Dewhirst and Dr Ann Marie Pendergast on these studies. Finally, we are trying to develop genomic and immunologic predictors of response to treatment to help optimize as well as personalize treatment approaches in this melanoma patient population.  These projects are in collaboration with Dr Joe Nevins and Dr Kent Weinhold.  
My clinical research focuses on translating our benchtop research into novel phase I and II clinical trials for patients with advanced extremity melanoma.  We have the largest regional therapy program for melanoma in the country and have several active multicenter trials which we initiated at Duke but also carry out at centers like MDACC, MSKCC, and Moffitt.  These trials have both a clinical endpoint component as well as several correlative science projects built into them that try to validate our preclinical findings.
Our work, both preclinical and clinical, is currently funded through a VA Merit Review grant, industry support, and the Duke Melanoma Research Fund.
