Fine needle aspiration biopsy, cytopathology
Research Interests:
My research interests involve the correlation of fine needle aspiration biopsy (RNA) diagnoses with other diagnostic modalities (surgical pathology, molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry and imaging studies). The current projects in which I am involved include several studies of the ability of FNA to accurately diagnose and subclassify malignant lymphomas. The prevailing lymphoma classification system relies less on architecture and more on cytomorphology and immunophenotyping. I am collaborating on one study to examine the utility of molecular diagnostics (both PCR and FISH) to improve the cytodiagnosis of small cell lymphoid neoplasms, and another to determine the role of core needle biopsies as a complement to FNA in the diagnosis of lymphoma.
I am also planning a follow-up study to a project involving the accuracy of grading soft tissue sarcomas by FNA. The follow-up will examine which diagnostic method is the best predictor of clinical outcome.
In addition, my interests include the development of new ancillary tests in gynecologic cytopathology. Specifically, the role of human papilloma virus (HPV) testing in the early detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, as well as the role of HPV testing in anal neoplasia.
