Research Interests:
I am based in northern Tanzania where I coordinate Duke University’s collaborative research program based at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre. I oversee the design and implementation of research studies in the areas of HIV voluntary counseling and testing, HIV home-based care, HIV treatment service delivery, descriptive studies of adult and pediatric HIV inpatients and outpatients, HIV disease staging, opportunistic infection prophylaxis and diagnosis, and clinical trials of antiretroviral therapy and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. In addition, I am a medical epidemiologist with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). My CDC work focuses on enteric infection epidemiology and prevention in developing countries. For the CDC I work on studies establishing the pathogen-specific burden of diarrhea in western Kenya and studies designed to better understand the global epidemiology and antimicrobial management of typhoid fever.
