Research Interests:
The cardiac function laboratory has several ongoing studies primarily in the area of cardiac mechanics and energetics, both in normal hearts and in hearts failing due to aortic regurgitation, mitral regurgitation, pacing induced cardiomyopathy, tricuspid regurgitation, and pulmonic stenosis.  In addition to studies of left ventricular energetics and mechanics, studies are also being performed on the effects of heart failure due to pressure or volume overload on right ventricular function and mechanics.  Several collaborative studies are in early stages to examine the ability to alter cardiac function by transfection of genetic material into cardiac myocytes or injection of genetically altered myocytes into the left ventricle.  

Several clinical research projects are in progress examining the effects of patient related variables or differing cardiac prostheses on outcome after cardiac valve replacement in patients with valvular heart disease.
