Clinical Interests:
Regional anesthesiology, general anesthesiology, pulse oximetry, ultrasound, placement of central venous catheters and nerve blocks

Research Interests:
Education and Regional Anesthesia
My principal clinical interest is the use of peripheral nerve blocks and the development of novel techniques to improve resident training. I have designed and launched a website (www.regionalABC.org) dedicated to lower extremity nerve blocks. This valuable resource is available to all clinicians in the operating room and in the pre-operative block area.  It can be accessed by residents for learning and review whilst faculty can use the diagrams and clinical photographs to illustrate particular teaching points at the bedside. I am the co-director of the Carolina Cadaver Course, which is run annually in conjunction with Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
I am also actively involved in teaching the use of ultrasound for the placement of peripheral nerve blocks.  I have lectured on several national courses.

Human Pharmacology Lab (HPL)
I am the Director of the HPL which is a Phase 1 research unit.  The unit's members consist of clinical faculty with clinical interest across the spectrum of anesthesia.  This year the HPL has completed the pharmacokinetic profile of a novel drug delivery device for inhaled fentanyl, which is currently under review by the FDA. We have started further volunteer and clinical studies of a new cerebral oximeter.  The study group is about to embark upon a study to determine if dexmedetomidine confers the effect of restorative sleep upon postop surgical patients.
