Anesthesia for outpatient care, eye surgery, pediatric anesthesiology

Research Interests:
1. I am pursuing advanced training in Clinical Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at UNC to develop expertise to conduct meaningful clinical outcomes research in areas of general, pediatric and regional anesthesiology.  The departmental resources are expanding to facilitate this research.

2. Medical ethical decision making.  I am involved at both the hospital and national levels.  We are ready to submit the manuscript on Clinical Challenges to Meaningful Informed Consent for Anesthesiology Research, and am preparing work on the ethics of transfusing pregnant Jehovah's Witness patients.

3. New modalities for the treatment of laryngospasm in pediatrics.  In a multicenter trial, we are comparing intramuscular and intravenous rocuronium on onset and duration for its efficacy of emergent laryngospasm with no intravenous access.  We are also conducting a randomized clinical trial of laryngeal mask airway placement techniques to manage difficult pediatric airways.

4. Pharmacokinetic modeling in pediatric patients.  We studied the accuracy and efficacy of computerized continuous infusions of fentanyl in pediatric surgical patients.  This manuscript is being published in the Dec. 1996 issue of Anesthesiology.

5. We evaluated the effect of providing accurate information in a pediatric preoperative teaching program on outcomes such as behavior at induction, post-operatively, and the child's experience of undergoing anesthesia.  The manuscript of this project has been accepted for publication.

6. Cochrane International Collaboration.  We are undertaking research on randomized clinical trials published in Anesthesia & Analgesia.  Systematic reviews of the data will be done to further evidence based clinical decision making.
