1. Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of transfusion on skeletal muscle energy metabolism in patients with sickle cell disease.
2. Objective The objective of this study is to determine whether transfusional therapy will affect tissue oxygen delivery and this the muscle bioenergetics in this group of patients. This information may be utilized to develop more rational approached to transfusion therapy. The primary, one-tailed hypothesis is that replacement of sickle cells by more deformable normal red blood cells will result in improved tissue oxygenation and substrate utilization within peripheral musculature.
