Clinical Interests:
Interested in developing innovative phase I and II trials in the treatment of children with recurrent brain tumors

Research Interests:
Dr. Gururangan is a member of the Duke University Medical Center Pediatric Neuro-Oncology program. His current research interest focuses on finding novel chemotheapeutic strategies for the treatment of children and young adults with brain tumors. Since beginning his tenure at the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, he has written four clinical protocols. These protocols have incorporated some of the important laboratory findings obtained from the laboratory of Dr. Henry Friedman. These protocols are designed to improve survival of children and young adults with brain stem gliomas and other malignant brain tumors. These protocols will be administered locally and in other regional clinics that share care with the brain tumor center. He is also the co-principal investigator on two protocols using oral Temzolomide in children and young adults with recurrent low-grade gliomas and newly diagnosed malignant brain tumors. Another protocol using the same drug, is studying the efficacy of this agent used in high-doses with stem cell rescue in high risk malignant brain tumors.  Dr. Gururangan is a member of the Pediatric Oncology Group and is a principal investigator on an upcoming POG phase II study of O6 Benzylguanine plus BCNU in children with recurrent malignant gliomas previously resistant to nitrosoureas.  This study will explore the novel mechanism of subverting tumor resistance to nitrosureas using O6 benzylguanine.  Dr. Gururangan is also a member of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium and has submitted a Letter of Intent (LOI) through the consortium to the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program for studying the toxicity and pharmacokinetics of  intrathecal Spartject(Busulfan in children with resistant leptomeningeal disease from recurrent brain tumors, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and lymphoma. As a member of these two groups he is in a strategic position to evaluate novel therapeutic modalities in patients with brain tumors.
