Research Interests:
The research in this laboratory focuses on the regulatory biology of melanocytes as relevant to melanocytic disease processes.  Disorders of melanocyte regulation can result in disease processes in which melanocytes are lost, as in vitiligo, in which too many melanocytes are present, as in moles or nevi, or in which the melanocytes have become malignant, as in melanoma.  Although melanocytes have been studied extensively in vitro, the complex cellular regulatory mechanisms controlling cutaneous melanocyte cell numbers and state of activity within the skin are still not well understood.  Our current efforts are focused on the potential role of melanocyte stem cells in normal and abnormal melanocytic biology.

Clinically, we are focused on efforts to allow the early detection of melanoma utilizing digital baseline skin images and surface microscopy.

Through our basic science research efforts, we have successfully competed for national awards and have been recognized for clinical expertise by appointment to a national committee for melanoma guidelines.

Key Words: melanoma, melanocyte, cancer, aging, stem cell factor, apoptosis KIT.
