Duke Hospital Auxiliary is seeking volunteers to provide retail service to the visitors and staff of Duke University Medical Center. Volunteer opportunities are available in each of the Medical Center's three gift shops.

The ability to smile under pressure, a desire to assist visitors and staff, and excellent customer service skills are a must. Appropriate verbal skills and a good energy level are always appreciated.giftshop-clerk1.png

Opportunities

  • Customer service
  • Selling merchandise
  • Cash register and computer (will train)
  • Re-stock shelves as needed
  • Deliver flowers
  • Answer phone
  • Assist manager as needed

Locations

  • Duke University Hospital Gift Shop -- open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Duke Clinic Gift Shop -- open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Duke Children's Hospital and Health Center, "The Bouncing Ball" -- open Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Other Details

Application requirements: The volunteers begin with a preliminary interview to ensure their interest in making a serious commitment. A background check, current TB test, and references are required. Volunteers must also complete a health review form.
Training provided: Fire & Safety and Compliance training, as well as on-the-job training from the gift shop manager.
Time commitment: Minimum two hours per week for a year.
