Active TEENS, a community outreach project of the Duke Healthy Lifestyles for Children program, is a free exercise program for overweight teens and their families.
Active TEENS participants are referred through the Healthy Lifestyles clinic, a multidisciplinary and comprehensive medical treatment program for childhood overweight and obesity.
Opportunities
The Active TEENS workout supervisor is responsible for overseeing the teens and their families as they complete the structured exercise routine, as well as serving as a mentor for the participants. Key responsibilities include:
- Regularly supervise one or more of the evening and weekend workout sessions with one other Workout Supervisor volunteer. Set up materials, greet and keep tallies of participants, demonstrate proper use of the exercise equipment, and guide participants through the workout routine.
- As appropriate, serve as a mentor and ongoing source of motivation for the Active TEENS participants, through e-mail correspondence, texts, or prompting Facebook discussions on healthy living.
- Teach (with others, if appropriate) at least one "special class activity" per semester. Special class activities may include pilates, yoga, or aerobic classes, or weather permitting, outdoor sports.
