Duke Orthopaedics is a national leader in the number of total ankle replacements, or total ankle arthroplasty, performed annually, ensuring our patients receive care from some of the most experienced and qualified surgeons in the world.
The ideal candidate for total ankle replacement is a patient with severe, debilitating ankle pain from arthritis or cartilage injury. Patients tend to be over age 50, weigh less than 250 pounds, and have a good blood supply and sensation of the ankle.
Our doctors expertly evaluate each patient to see if they would benefit from total ankle replacement and often accept patients with complex situations that other centers can’t or won’t treat. We are, in some cases, able to place a total ankle into a previously fused ankle.
The evaluation process and care of patients with total ankle replacements is ongoing. Doctors assess the gait (how a patient walks) of the patient before and after surgery to see how well the replacement is working.
Whether it’s the latest tool, technique, or materials, our surgeons have the skills and knowledge to select the treatment that is right for you.
We use the most advanced prosthetic designs that accurately mimic the human ankle and offer improved surgical techniques that allow for more precise alignment of the implant, which is critical in ankle replacement.
In total ankle replacement surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the front of the ankle and removes the damaged joint. He replaces the joint with a prosthesis made of plastic and metal.
The Duke team has experience with all ankle prostheses currently approved for use in the United States (INBONE, SaltoTalaris, and STAR).
Our doctors are continually involved in clinical trials and research that test new prostheses and devices. This allows our patients to receive the most cutting-edge technology in surgeries performed by the most experienced surgeons.
When it comes to surgery of any type, there is no substitute for experience. The surgeons who make up the foot and ankle team at Duke are some of the best in the world.
Our surgeons participated in the original clinical research for the STAR replacement and continue to conduct innovative research that seeks new and better ways to treat foot and ankle conditions.
Doctors Nunley, Easley, and DeOrio write articles and text books related to foot and ankle surgery operative procedures and travel all over the country teaching other surgeons how to do ankle replacements.
Duke is one of the nation’s leaders in the number of total ankle replacements performed annually. And because of our highly qualified staff and state-of-the-art medical facilities, patients come to Duke from around the world for our expert care.
