If hospitalization is required for children, they are usually admitted to Duke Children’s Hospital in Durham. Intensive care is provided by the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit is housed within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and is specially adapted to provide the highest quality, most efficient care for patients with congenital heart disease.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU operates in close association with pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric cardiology, and neonatology in the care of patients with heart disease. In fact, all infants less than one month of age admitted to the Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU have a formal consultation with neonatology.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU consists of a dedicated 13-bed unit at Duke University Hospital. All patients are cared for by nurses and respiratory therapists with specific training in pediatric cardiovascular diseases.
The Pediatric Cardiothoracic ICU is staffed by four physicians board certified in pediatric critical care medicine, including two cardiac anesthesiologists and one pediatric cardiologist. Two additional cardiac anesthesiologists also provide services to pediatric patients.

After recovering from the critical stage of their illness, patients are transferred either directly to the Pediatric Cardiology Ward Service or to the Pediatric Intensive Care Step-Down Unit. Here patients continue to receive daily care from pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, pediatric cardiac nurse practitioners, along with the Duke pediatric interns and residents.
Discharge planning is developed with the help of a discharge planning coordinator, making sure that all the different elements of the follow-up care are arranged, including prescription medications, outpatient appointments, and important contact numbers in case questions arise once you are home.
