Duke is one of the busiest and most experienced heart transplant centers in the world, performing over 40 heart transplants annually with excellent long-term results.
For patients with advanced heart failure that cannot be controlled with standard medical and surgical therapies, heart transplantation may offer vastly improved survival and quality of life. An extensive evaluation to determine the severity of heart disease and the health of other body systems is the first step in the heart transplant process.
Once accepted into the program, the potential recipient’s name is entered into a national waiting list. Though the median wait time for patients at Duke is two months, patients should expect to wait an average of six months to receive a transplant.
Care before and after transplantation is provided by a multidisciplinary team that includes cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, transplant nurse coordinators, pharmacists, and social workers.
