Duke’s congenital heart disease program includes a Duke surgical team dedicated to helping adults with congenital heart disease. Our surgeons perform adult congenital procedures with volumes that rank in the top 10 nationally and are far greater than any other facility in the Southeast.
Surgical approaches include the use of mini-thoracotomy and minimally invasive procedures.
The mini-thoracotomy approach may be used to close holes in the heart (atrial septal defects) or to repair or replace certain heart valves (mitral, tricuspid, or aortic).
In a mini-thoracotomy, the surgeon makes a small incision under a patient's rib to perform the surgery; this tiny incision decreases healing time and makes it easier for the patient to recover.
