Duke University's kidney transplant team reached a milestone on Dec. 5, 2011, when surgeons performed the first four-way paired transplant in the Triangle and only the second in the state of North Carolina.

The complicated, all-day procedure involved two living donors and two recipients, and was made possible through the selfless gift of donors committed to enhancing the lives of people whose own organs were failing.
