While walking in November 2003, Faye Washington began to have pain in her chest and left elbow. When she finished exercising, the pain went away. This was the only symptom Faye experienced and it only occurred while she walked.

During a regular check up, Faye brought this to her doctor's attention. He recommended she get a cardio stress test. The test results indicated there was something wrong with Faye's heart. Her physicians began to monitor her closely.

In July 2004, Faye underwent a cardiac catheterization that showed a 90 percent blockage in the main artery in the front of her heart. A stent was placed to help Faye's heart function better. Nearly eight months later in February 2005, Faye began to experience pain again while she walked. She underwent surgery on February 18 to receive another sent, which was placed just above the first stent to open another blockage.

To aide in her recovery, Faye's physicians recommended she participate in the Wellness Institute at Durham Regional Hospital. The Wellness Institute is a cardiac rehabilitation program. The staff assisted Faye with her rehabilitation needs as well as providing classes on nutrition and exercise.

Today, Faye continues to put into practice those things she learned from the staff at the Wellness Institute. She exercises regularly and has changed her eating habits. Faye encourages women to pay attention to their bodies and to report any changes to their doctor. She also stresses that women need to take the time to exercise. It can make all the difference.
