daniel.jpgMy name is Larry Daniel and I am 57 years old. My back problems began several years ago.

I first noticed little changes in my back; there was a little ache here and a little pain there, and then the pain got worse. As time went on, I noticed the pain would travel from my lower back down to my legs. The pain was so bad it began to affect my personal life, and my performance at work.

I noticed that I could not walk around the major department stores without leaning over a shopping cart. At one point, I had to sit in the car while my family shopped. That's when I realized I needed to seek the help of a professional.

I first mentioned my back pain to my primary care doctor in January of 2010. He referred me to an orthopedic specialist where an MRI and x-rays of my spine were done, and that is when I found out how serious my condition was. The orthopaedic specialist suggested epidural steroid injections and physical therapy, so I decided to follow his plan.

The injection did relieve the pain, but only for a couple of weeks. The pain returned, but it was much worse this time. I knew then I had to try a different route. That's when I decided to make an appointment with Duke Orthopaedics.

I took a copy of my MRI and x-rays to my appointment. I first saw Dr. Karyn Rahn. She examined my back, took a look at my MRI and x-rays, and told me that surgery was my only option if I wanted permanent relief from the pain. She told me that she could not handle my case. I needed to see a neurosurgery specialist. That's when I met Dr. Oren Gottfried.

Dr. Gottfried took the time to explain what was going on with my spine. He also told me in detail (with pictures and my x-rays) how he was going to perform the surgery. I felt a sense of relief and knew right then he was the man for the job.

He answered all of my questions and that assured me that he cared about me and my well-being. With this gained confidence received through Dr. Gottfried, we agreed to schedule the surgery the day after our first meeting.

The surgery was a success and I do not regret my decision. It has been nine weeks since my surgery and I feel great. I am walking without the pain in my back and legs, and I do not use a cane or walker. I know this could not have been done without Dr. Gottfried and his surgical team. I thank each and every one of them for giving me my freedom back.

In every step I take, I thank Dr. Gottfried and his surgical team for their awesome skills, which helped me to walk pain free again.
